India is still Trying to Build a negative Narrative against Pakistan
The 2024 SCO Summit in Islamabad was a significant event for Pakistan, which sought to enhance bilateral relations with its neighbors, including India. Pakistan hoped to use the summit as a platform to project a positive image and foster constructive dialogue. However, India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, approached the summit with a different narrative that many in Pakistan perceived as an attempt to undermine the country’s image.
During his speech, Jaishankar emphasized the issue of terrorism in the region, calling for the elimination of terrorism “in all its forms.” While he did not explicitly mention Pakistan, the implication was clear, as India has long accused Pakistan of supporting cross-border terrorism and providing safe havens for terrorist groups. Jaishankar’s remarks were seen as a direct critique aimed at holding Pakistan accountable for its alleged role in regional instability. This stance contrasted sharply with Pakistan’s efforts to use the summit as a venue for promoting a positive narrative about itself as a peace-seeking nation and addressing economic and geopolitical challenges in collaboration with its neighbors.
The Pakistani delegation was taken aback by Jaishankar’s rhetoric, interpreting it as an attempt to derail Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts and paint the country in a negative light. Despite the Indian minister’s efforts to steer the narrative towards terrorism, Pakistan’s representatives made concerted efforts to shift the focus back to constructive regional cooperation, economic development, and collective security. Pakistani officials pointed out that Jaishankar’s comments could be seen as a “devilish narrative” aimed at vilifying Pakistan on the international stage, thereby reinforcing old accusations that had been levied against the country.
Nevertheless, the summit did not solely revolve around the accusations exchanged between India and Pakistan. Other member states, including China, Russia, and Central Asian nations, remained focused on broader regional cooperation, economic growth, and connectivity projects. The diversity of issues discussed during the summit helped to counterbalance Jaishankar’s criticism, as several countries refrained from taking sides or echoing the Indian narrative. Pakistan, for its part, highlighted its contributions to regional security and emphasized its efforts to combat terrorism within its borders, presenting itself as a responsible member of the international community.
While Jaishankar’s attempt to highlight terrorism as a central issue was aimed at challenging Pakistan, the summit’s outcomes did not align neatly with India’s agenda. Pakistan managed to avoid being cornered diplomatically, as the summit’s official documents and declarations did not single out any country for criticism regarding terrorism. This allowed Pakistan to portray itself as resilient against what it perceived as a targeted attack on its image. The summit ultimately offered a platform for diverse voices and narratives, including those that challenged the portrayal of Pakistan advanced by Jaishankar.
In the end, the 2024 SCO Summit in Islamabad demonstrated the complexity of regional diplomacy, with India and Pakistan presenting contrasting narratives while other member states maintained a focus on broader regional issues. Despite the tensions, the summit concluded without any significant shifts in diplomatic alignments, indicating that Jaishankar’s efforts to reshape Pakistan’s image were not entirely successful.
Conclusion
The 2024 SCO Culmination in Islamabad saw a conflict of accounts among India and Pakistan, with S. Jaishankar stressing psychological oppression and in a roundabout way blaming Pakistan for supporting it. Pakistan saw this as an endeavor to mess up its appearance and wreck endeavors to work on reciprocal ties. Nonetheless, the highest point’s more extensive spotlight on territorial collaboration and monetary advancement kept Jaishankar’s account from ruling the talk. Regardless of the strain, Pakistan figured out how to keep up with its position and present a versatile picture, while the highest point finished up without critical political changes for India’s plan.
